Staff at State hospitals will down tools today for five hours in a countrywide protest stoppage.
All goverment hospitals and health centres will run on a skeleton staff, with only one doctor assigned to each accident and emergeny ward, two to insentive care units and one nurse in each other department. The Cyprus Turksish Public servants, Union ammounced yesterday that members would stop work to rule at Girne's State Hospital earlier this month and threatened to shut down even emergency wards unless the goverment took on more nurses and doctors.
The Stoppage decision came yesterday upon the revelation that the Health Ministry was to contract nurses from the private sector.
Union heads said emergency patients would still be dealt with but warned the public not to go to hospital unless necessary during the action.
Workers, who staged a demonstration on Monday, will gather at Lefkosa State Hospital at 09:30am today, before marching to the health Ministry, where they will their medical overalls. Oguz Kose chairman of the Nurses and Midwives, union criticised the Health Ministry for trying to contract 15 nurses and 11 doctors from the private sector.
